5 Practices That Will Grow Your Social Media Following

January 5, 2021

Social media basics

A robust social media audience can do a lot to build your personal brand. If you have been putting off jumping into the social media scene, it is way easier to get going than you think.

Here are 5 super simple, sure-fire, ways to grow your social media following and community.

Follow

Do you want to build an engaged following? Well, then you too must engage. Think of it like friendships, if you never put yourself out there you likely won’t have very good relationships. The same is true on social. Find your people and follow them. It can be people you admire in your industry, authors, stylists, athletes, celebrities, or companies you like.

Comment

If you are a broadcaster, athlete, CEO, or influencer, realize the impact you can have on others just by interacting with them on social. Comment on someone’s post that you follow or follow up on a comment someone makes on one of your posts. Give your two cents and offer an opinion or show your support by empathizing with someone’s issue. Think of it this way. You wouldn’t sit at a dinner party and never say a single word. Imagine your social channels are a social gathering where you take part in the party too.

Share

One of the easiest ways to grow a social media following is to grow your social engagement by being abundant. Find something you like or that resonates. Retweet, share it on LinkedIn or like it on Instagram. It is like social media charity work in your online community. Look at it as your way of taking care of your online community.  What comes around goes around.  Supporting others who are trying to grow will also serve you too.  I’m in the business of helping people find jobs. When I see a good job post on LinkedIn that is relevant to my audience, I share it.

Post

If you want to build your following, you have to provide consistent content. If you are a sporadic poster, people stop counting on you for content and forget about you. Social media isn’t a one-way street. You should be providing fresh, meaningful content to your audience regularly. Behind the scenes, access, advice, insight, tips. If you are J.Lo status, lucky you, photograph your fabulous life and share what it is like to be you. Everyone else, keep reading.

Pay attention

You don’t have to hire someone or conduct a social media audit and pour over analytics to understand people follow you because they want something in return. Pay attention to what your followers want from you. Look at what they like and engage with, what they ask you about. Unless you are super important social media isn’t a one-way street. It would be best if you give something to your audience. Behind the scenes access, advice, insight, tips
